Parliament is poised to return to normal functioning after a period of disruption marked by opposition demands. Following a crucial meeting of floor leaders, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that members expressed concern over the stalemate and agreed to resume discussions from Tuesday.
The two Houses of Parliament had faced repeated adjournments due to protests by opposition parties demanding discussions on several issues, including the Adani controversy, the Sambhal violence, and the situation in Manipur. To break this deadlock, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla convened a meeting with floor leaders of various political parties on Monday afternoon.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rijiju stated that all participants acknowledged the importance of parliamentary functioning and expressed their commitment to resuming discussions constructively. He highlighted that the opposition had raised several demands during the meeting, including a discussion on the Constitution.
“A proposal was before the Business Advisory Committee to have a discussion on the Constitution, and the government has agreed to it,” Rijiju said. "On December 13-14, we will hold a discussion on the Constitution. The discussion would first be held in Lok Sabha...everyone has accepted. On December 16-17, the discussion will be held in Rajya Sabha."
Rijiju emphasized that while opposition parties are entitled to raise issues, disrupting parliamentary proceedings is detrimental to the democratic process. He reiterated that all elected representatives have a right to voice their opinions within the framework of established rules and procedures.
The meeting saw participation from prominent figures like Congress member Gaurav Gogoi, TDP's Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, DMK's TR Baalu, NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule, Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav, Janata Dal-United member Dileshwar Kamait, RJD's Abhay Kushwaha - RJD, TMC's Kalyan Banerjee, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant, and CPI(M) leader K Radhakrisnan.
Gaurav Gogoi stated that the opposition has been demanding a discussion on the Constitution in both Houses of Parliament to commemorate 75 years since its adoption. Kalyan Banerjee expressed optimism that parliament would resume normal functioning from Tuesday, emphasizing the agreement reached regarding the Constitution discussion and other pending issues.
The winter session of Parliament commenced on November 25th and is scheduled to conclude on December 20th.
