The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for several parts of South India as Cyclone Fengal's remnants continue to influence weather patterns in the region. The low-pressure area, formed from the weakened cyclone, is expected to persist over North Interior Tamil Nadu and move towards the southeast Arabian Sea by December 3rd.
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls is predicted for certain areas of South India on December 2nd. The ghat districts of Tamil Nadu and regions bordering Kerala are particularly susceptible to these intense downpours. These conditions will gradually lessen, transitioning to isolated heavy rainfall by December 3rd.
Kerala can expect heavy to very heavy rainfall in several places with the possibility of extremely heavy falls at isolated spots on December 2nd. On December 3rd, heavy rainfall is anticipated throughout the state. South Interior Karnataka will also experience heavy to very heavy rainfall with the potential for extremely heavy falls in isolated areas on December 2nd, followed by isolated heavy rainfall on December 3rd. Coastal Karnataka can anticipate heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on December 2nd, transitioning to isolated heavy rainfall on December 3rd.
The remnants of Cyclone Fengal caused significant flooding in the coastal areas of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry upon its landfall. The Sankaraparani River in Puducherry was particularly affected, inundating over 200 residences in NR Nagar. Rescue efforts are underway by the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist those stranded in the flooded areas.
The IMD has been closely monitoring the system's progress through Doppler Weather Radar at Karaikal. The depression, a remnant of Cyclone Fengal over North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, moved west-northwestward at a speed of 7 km/h during the past six hours and was centered near latitude 12.2°N and longitude 79.2°E on December 1st. It is expected to continue moving west-northwestward and gradually weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over North Interior Tamil Nadu during the next six hours.
The IMD urges residents in affected areas to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of heavy rainfall.
