More than a decade after capturing hearts and raising eyebrows with her role in 'The Wolf of Wall Street', Margot Robbie is opening up about some of the bold decisions she made during the film's production. In a recent interview, Robbie discussed how she personally chose to appear fully nude in one of the film's most iconic scenes.
The scene in question showcases Robbie's character, Naomi Lapaglia, seducing stockbroker Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). It became one of the most talked-about moments of the film. While director Martin Scorsese had offered her the option to wear a robe for comfort, Robbie insisted on appearing completely naked. "The whole point is that she's going to come out completely naked – that's the card she's playing," Robbie explained. "That's not what she would do in that scene if she wasn't in control."
Robbie's decision reflects the manipulative and powerful nature of Naomi's character. The calculated seduction of DiCaprio's Belfort is a memorable and controversial moment in the film, made even more impactful by Robbie's willingness to embrace complete vulnerability on screen.
Robbie also shared an unforgettable story about her final audition for the film. The scene called for her to kiss DiCaprio, but Robbie surprised everyone by opting for a slap instead. "I thought, I could kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now, and that would be awesome. I can't wait to tell all of my friends this," she recalled. Then, she added, "And then I thought… nah. And just walloped him in the face."
The actress described the immediate aftermath as tense silence, which quickly turned into laughter from both DiCaprio and Scorsese. Despite the positive reaction, Robbie admitted to fearing the worst at the time. "I was thinking, 'I'm going to get arrested, I'm pretty sure that's assault, battery,' she confessed. "Not only will you never work again, actually you will go to jail for this, you idiot. And also, why did you have to hit him so hard? You should have done it lighter.'"
Robbie's daring choices extended beyond on-screen actions. She revealed that she came up with the idea for Naomi and Jordan to have intercourse one last time before she told him she wanted a divorce. According to Robbie, director Martin Scorsese was always open to discussing and revising the script. "We were a couple of months into the shoot at that point," she recalled. "The tone had been set that it was a bit of a free-for-all. It was like the crazier you are, the more Marty will like it. And the more screen time you're going to get."
Robbie also noted that Scorsese wasn't known for giving strict directions to actors. Instead, they would often converse informally. "I'd sit at video village, and he would tell stories about the Mafia and old film stars, but he didn't actually give direction," she said. This open, collaborative atmosphere on set allowed Robbie to contribute more creatively to her role.
Margot Robbie's portrayal of Naomi Lapaglia in 'The Wolf of Wall Street' remains a defining moment in her career, earning her critical acclaim and solidifying her status as one of Hollywood's leading actresses. The film, directed by Martin Scorsese, was released in 2013 and became notorious for its high-energy performances and provocative content.
