Pakistan's anti-terrorism court (ATC) has remanded former Prime Minister Imran Khan into judicial custody for 14 days. This decision came after Khan was arrested in seven cases related to alleged vandalism that occurred during protests.
The ATC judge, Amjad Ali Shah, approved the remand order, sending Khan to Adiala Jail. This follows a previous bail granted to Khan in another case, the Toshakhana case.
Khan is currently being held at the New Town Police Station cell and faces charges stemming from protests that took place on September 28th. He remains under physical remand until December 2nd in connection with this specific case.
The arrest of Khan has sparked widespread concern within Pakistan. His political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has expressed serious worries about his health and safety. In a statement released on Sunday following an important meeting of their political committee, the PTI called for unrestricted access to Khan.
The committee emphasized the growing public anxiety surrounding Khan's well-being and requested immediate restoration of access for his family, legal team, and party officials. They believe this is crucial for ensuring transparency and accountability in his treatment.
The PTI statement also urged both federal and Punjab governments, along with prison authorities, to provide regular updates on Khan's health status. They appealed to the judiciary to protect Khan's fundamental rights and ensure robust security measures are in place. The committee issued a strong warning, holding the Prime Minister, Punjab Chief Minister, and relevant state institutions accountable for any lapse in safeguarding Khan's safety.
Previously, authorities from Adiala Jail had assured the public that Khan was in good health. This statement came after reports suggesting Khan might be transferred to another location.
