Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata during an exciting Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 match on Saturday.
The home team emerged triumphant thanks to a powerful strike from Jason Cummings in the 86th minute, despite Chennaiyin FC's relentless efforts throughout the game.
The first half was a captivating display of football, with Chennaiyin FC showing their intent right from the start. The Marina Machans, as they are known, dictated the tempo and created several promising scoring opportunities. In the 25th minute, Lalrinliana Hnamte unleashed a powerful shot from distance, but it was expertly blocked by the Mohun Bagan defense. Five minutes later, Ryan Edwards headed powerfully towards goal from a cross by Pachuau Laldinpuia, but his effort was kept out by the impressive Mariners' goalkeeper.
Mohun Bagan also had their moments in the first half. Liston Colaco came close to scoring with a long-range shot that sailed just wide of the target. However, both teams went into the halftime break scoreless.
The second half began with Chennaiyin FC continuing their dominance. Wilmar Jordan Gil and Connor Shields caused problems for the Mohun Bagan defense with their pace and creativity. In the 54th minute, Shields delivered a pinpoint cross to Wilmar, but his header went just wide of the goal. Nine minutes later, Elsinho had another chance to put Chennaiyin FC ahead, but his weak header was easily saved by the goalkeeper.
As the game wore on, Mohun Bagan started to find their rhythm. Jason Cummings, who came off the bench in the 65th minute, proved to be a game-changer. In the 86th minute, he received a brilliant pass from Greg Stewart and coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net.
This was Cummings' fourth goal of the season and sealed a hard-fought victory for Mohun Bagan Super Giant. The win moved them to the top of the ISL table, while Chennaiyin FC remained in mid-table.
The next fixtures for both teams will see Mohun Bagan Super Giant face NorthEast United FC on December 8th, while Chennaiyin FC will take on East Bengal FC on December 7th.
