Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher believes Manchester City's recent slump in form means they won't be able to win the Premier League this season. His comments come after City suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Anfield, where Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo led Liverpool to victory.
Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports, said he sees no way back for City in their title challenge. "I don't see there's any way back for Manchester City now. Sometimes you need to lose so people realize what you've done so you don't take it for granted. And maybe he's sending a message to the hierarchy, the people above him and the fans," he said.
He described City's situation as a "mini-crisis" and compared their current predicament to Liverpool's two years ago. Carragher even suggested that City could struggle to secure a top four finish if they don't strengthen their squad in the January transfer window. "I think it's reminiscent of Liverpool two years ago. I actually think they might have a fight on their hands for the top four," he added. "I look at Arsenal, Chelsea and the way they are looking right now and I think it will be difficult for Man City to finish above them if they don't go into the market in January."
Liverpool dominated the match from start to finish. Gakpo opened the scoring in the 12th minute, capitalizing on Salah's brilliant pass, and Salah himself sealed the victory with a penalty in the 78th minute after Luis Diaz was fouled.
Despite City growing into the game in the second half, they struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-organized Liverpool defense. The defeat leaves City eleven points behind league leaders Liverpool, who continue their impressive form with a nine-point lead over second-placed Arsenal.
